Scientist/Senior Scientist, Protein Purification and Downstream Process Development

We are seeking a Scientist/Sr. Scientist to join our Protein Sciences team to support the production of therapeutic bispecific antibodies and other therapeutic modalities. The candidate will be responsible for the purification of large-scale protein production to support pre-clinical development and optimization of downstream process development in support of CMC of biologics.  He/she/they will work on optimization of the downstream process, automation, and will be involved in a wide range of activities to support the discovery and engineering of biologics, including close collaboration with internal and external teams.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated a sustained track record of being an impactful and collaborative scientist, who is comfortable in a fast-paced research start-up environment.

Join a fast-paced, collaborative, cutting-edge start-up biotechnology company developing the next generation of therapeutic bispecific antibodies focused on extracellular protein degradation. Our mission is to generate novel transformative medicines for the patients that need it most.

Day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Lead development, optimization, and scale-up of purification processes for biologics to support early and late-stage development

  • Be hands-on and execute lab scale-up operations to meet project deliverables for in vivo pharmacology studies

  • Design and independently execute experiments to develop efficient, effective downstream purification processes for antibodies and bi-specific antibodies

  • Plan and execute all aspects of a downstream process development campaign to support CMC, including chromatography screening and optimization, filtration optimization, viral inactivation, neutralization and chromatography-based polishing steps

  • Oversee tech transfer of developed processes to CDMOs

  • Collaborate in multi-functional teams to successfully execute programs as they move into manufacturing

  • Compile data and maintain electronic records/batch records used to support/contribute to technical/development reports for technology transfer and regulatory submission

  • Proactively seek out new tools, techniques, and strategies to implement into individual programs(s) as well as the overall downstream platform

  • Write technical publications, reports, presentations, SOPs

  • Work efficiently, collaboratively, and cross-functionally toward project timelines and goal

Required Education / Experience and Skills:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline

  • 5+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience in protein purification (multiple modes of chromatography, depth & membrane filtration & ultrafiltration/TFF). Extensive knowledge of product variant and process-related impurity removal strategies expected

  • Extensive experience in scaling up, transferring, and supporting purification processes from bench scale to pilot and/or commercial scale

  • Proficiency with routine in-process analytics to support process development (e.g., protein concentration, SDS-PAGE, HPLC-SEC, endotoxin). A deep understanding of other analytical methods is required; such methods may include, Western blotting, IEF, CE-SDS, IEX, Tm, DLS. ELISA, as well as HPLC- based methods

  • Must be a subject matter expert in purification of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) or other antibody-based biologics. Experience in protein purification to support pre-clinical in vivo and Phase I studies is preferred

  • Expert user of AKTA chromatographic instruments; experience with automation of the process is highly desired, knowledge of maintenance and cleaning procedures is preferred

  • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills and able to work in a high paced team environment to meet deadlines and prioritize work on multiple projects

  • Accurate record keeping is a must

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to do scientific presentations and regular updates

Job level will be based on prior experience and accomplishment. The expected base salary range for this role is $118,000-$135,000 for a Scientist and $130,000-$154,000 for a Senior Scientist.

The above pay range is what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Individual compensation is based on various factors, including experience, education, skillset, and geographic location.  This pay range is for the Bay Area, CA, location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.
